In Stanislaus County there are more than a hundred thousand adults with very low literacy skills. That's 41% of the adult population of our county.

ReadingWorks, in Modesto, California, is dedicated to teaching adults how to read and write. Any adult aged 16 years or older who reads at less than the seventh grade level is eligible for our free literacy training programs.

Adult Literacy Services are provided by a non-profit partnership between the Stanislaus Literacy Center (209-522-0656) and the Stanislaus County Library (209-558-4505).

How You Can Help

The reading level of these adults is so limited that they can't read and understand a job application, read a lease, or any sort of simple written instructions. They are unable to find an intersection on a map, locate information in a newspaper or help their children with their schoolwork.
Today we have nearly a hundred trained and dedicated volunteers teaching in our programs. But we need more to meet the needs of the students waiting for help now. To learn more about becoming a Tutor click here.

Many of these with the lowest literacy levels live in poverty because they seldom have full time jobs; and, not surprisingly, a third of prison inmates also fall into this low literacy skills category.    If you would like to learn more about Literacy in America, the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) web site is an excellent source of information.
