Stanislaus Literacy Center
2005 Annual Report

      1. Who we are

The Stanislaus Literacy Center (SLC) is the primary source for adult literacy training in Stanislaus County.

      2. Why we exist

156,965 adults in our county are functionally illiterate: that's 51% of the workforce.

      3. What we do

One on one tutoring in literacy; small group classes for reading instruction; family literacy for women and their children; English language training; health literacy; and GED preparation.

      4. How we're doing

Last year we trained 953 adults on the outside and 529 inside correctional facilities. Our operating budget of $851,218 supported the equivalent of 22 full-time staff and 144 volunteer tutors.

    5. Who benefits

All the people we help initially, and eventually everyone who lives here; because future business development in Stanislaus County depends on the availability of a skilled workforce.

      6. Who runs the SLC

A full-time Executive Director (Karen Williams) assisted by a twelve member board of directors.

      7. Who pays the bills

We depend on government and private grants, plus some fees for our services in the county correctional facilities, and donations from local businesses and citizens like you.
