Teaching
reading is not difficult. We provide all the training and
tools at no cost. We simply ask our tutors to come to an orientation
meeting, and then attend one of our periodic 6-hour training
sessions before being matched with a student.
We provide free training materials,
based on the Laubach Literacy
Center's teaching methods. These include booklets appropriate for
the student's level of learning, plus a Teacher's manual for the
tutor that explains how to lead the student step-by step through
each lesson. After finishing the first lesson book, students are
able to read short stories on their own and experience the joy of
reading for the first time.

Tutors are
expected to participate in the program for a minimum of six months
and should be available to meet with their assigned student for at
least two hours each week. Tutors are also asked to submit monthly
reports to document their tutoring hours.
Next
Training Session
On
Wednesday, April 9. 2008 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm there will be an
Orientation meeting in the Auditorium at the Modesto Library, 1500 I
Street for individuals interested in becoming tutors. Then a tutor
training session will be conducted at the United Way Bldg. 422
McHenry Ave. Modesto, CA on Saturday, April 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The
orientation and training session costs $10 which includes a book
that serves as a valuable reference tool for you as tutor.
