Family Literacy is based on the premise that the parents are a
child's first and best teacher. Therefore it is essential to help
the parent to read. At the same time we can give the parent the
tools to expose their pre-school children to the alphabet and to
books. Our objective is to inspire the parent and child to read
together and to give them games and activities to share at home.

These programs meet in neighborhood schools and in
residential programs for women and their children. Parents are given
reading and writing instruction while children are encouraged to
make reading a regular part of their life. This family- focused
learning improves the participation of the parents in their child's
schooling.

Eight family literacy programs are currently in operation at:
-
Salida Elementary in Salida
-
Robertson Road Elementary in Modesto
-
California Avenue Elementary and Rio Altura Elementary in
Riverbank
- Chrysler Elementary in Modesto
- Robertson Road and Bret Harte Elementary in Modesto
While the parents are tutored in reading they are also taught how to
nurture an interest in reading in their children. A
teacher prepares activities for the children and
oversees the early development of their literacy skills.

Some books
are given to the families so that they can have a library in their
home. Plus there are other books available that can be borrowed and
returned. |
