Family Literacy
Three schools and a Modesto community center in Stanislaus County currently have this program to help parents become their child’s first and best teacher. It is offered in the neighborhood school and provides child care. This program is for parents who need to improve their English and want to be better able to read to their child and/or help their child with homework.

Success Story
Jose has been a student at the program in Salida since September of 2003 when he scored in the Intermediate Low ESL range. He has been tardy on occasion and has shown up covered with a layer of dirt because he came straight from work. But even late, he showed up prepared for class and ready for the next assignment. His dedication shows in his test scores-he is now at the Advanced level. When his bicycle was stolen from right outside his classroom door, he showed up at the following class-on a much smaller bike.
Jose has 2 young children and a wife that attends classes during the morning at Salida Even Start. They are both dedicated to Family Literacy. When a special Family Reading Program was held at the Salida Library, Jose and his family attended every week. He enjoys the children’s books he receives from our classes and takes them home to read with his entire family. They are involved, not just during class time, but in their day-to-day lives.
Now Jose & Paola have met a long time goal. They have established a landscaping business. They have 26 regular customers and the business is growing. His wife helps him with making appointments and taking messages on the phone. Jose and his wife will tell you that working hard on improving their English skills has benefited and will continue to benefit the lives of their family.
