In the past year the Stanislaus Literacy Center and ReadingWorks has been able to offer free reading and writing instruction to more than 250 Stanislaus County residents. Most of this was accomplished through the assistance of volunteers who donate 2-3 hours per week for tutoring individuals and small groups.

Still it costs $300 per student for us to provide:
1. the educational materials used by  both the student and the tutor,
2. the training and administrative support required,
3. and, in some instances,  evaluations by specialists to test for learning disabilities.

Although we receive some funding from the County and the Library, we must rely heavily on the generosity of individuals, local companies and service organizations to keep our programs running.

United Way contributions are also an important source of our funding. You may make a contribution through the United Way, by designating the Stanislaus Literacy Center, Modesto as the recipient of your contribution.

Of course all gifts are tax deductible and we will provide a letter of receipt acknowledging your generosity.

Karen Williams, the Executive Director of the Stanislaus Literacy Center on the left and Brenda Suarez, the 2006 President of the SLC Board of Directors on the right, accept a $4,500 donation to the SLC scholarship fund from Brian Hogan the Regional President of U.S. Bank.

Overall nearly 200 individuals have made contributions to our program this year. But we are especially grateful to the organizations and individuals listed on the right for the substantial financial support they have given us.

Sign-On-To- Literacy

Each September the Modesto BEE sponsors a Sign-On-To Literacy program with an insert in their paper. In the past the proceeds from this effort were divided among the BEE, the Literacy Network (a local coordinating body) and the Stanislaus Literacy Center. Last year our organization received $3,863 from this program. Going forward the Literacy Network will direct their share to the SLC and the BEE will only charge for the printing.

We would like to gratefully acknowledge all those organizations and individuals who contributed to our organization in that way as well.
