It didn't matter that he
was 50 years old with grown children, Bob wanted to learn to read.
He sat his family down and told them about his plans. His children
were shocked that he couldn't read. "How come you always knew the
answers to our questions," they asked? Bob laughs and his eyes
crinkle as he remembers how surprised they were. He is proud that
he was able to hide it so well that his own children didn't realize
his inability to read.
Bob was only allowed to
go to school until third grade when he had to quit and work in the
fields to help feed his family.
Some of his brothers and sisters learned to read those first couple
of years of school, but Bob didn't. Later on in life, Bob learned
that he was dyslexic.
When he finally decided to do something about it, he began studying
with a tutor. The tutor still remembers the day the light came
on and he finally was able to read the words. |

After
that, it was easier and he learned more quickly. However, he
still struggled with some words. A reading specialist worked
with Bob and used certain techniques that work well with people with
dyslexia. More lights came on.

Now Bob is able to sit and read the Bible (his personal goal) with
his tutor without pausing. He was able to fill out a loan
application recently. He wants to take the GED test. Then, he'll
have to sit his family down again for another announcement. |
